Overview

Master Strategists design how the organization itself works. Operating models, the executive skill stack, repeatable application of the 6 questions, and a long-arc view that survives quarter-to-quarter noise. The work stops being technical and becomes about leverage, judgment, and time horizons longer than the next sprint.

Designing the operating model

  • ▸Centralize standards & platforms; federate execution.
  • ▸RACI (Responsible, Accountable, Consulted, Informed) on every recurring decision — ambiguity is the slow killer.
  • ▸Build a thin platform team; product teams own their workloads.
  • ▸Make security & cost guardrails, not gates.

The executive skill stack

  • ▸Written communication — memos beat decks for decisions.
  • ▸Financial fluency — read a P&L, model unit economics.
  • ▸Negotiation — interests over positions.
  • ▸Storytelling — outcome → mechanism → ask, every time.
  • ▸Patience — most leverage compounds across years.

Applying the 6 questions

On any real problem, run the framework out loud, in writing, before committing resources. It looks slow and is actually fast — it removes the rework that comes from skipping question 3 ('what are we willing to trade?') or question 6 ('what changes after we ship?').

Playing the long arc

  • ▸Set 3-year direction, 1-year objectives, quarterly bets.
  • ▸Default to reversible decisions; spend deliberation on irreversible ones.
  • ▸Invest in the org's learning rate — that's the moat.
  • ▸Outlast trends. Distrust certainty about anything more than 18 months out.
