Vocabulary, the ticket queue, and the box in front of you.

Overview

Your first weeks on a help desk are about pattern recognition: learning which words mean what, how a ticket moves through a queue, and the six parts that make up almost every PC (Personal Computer). Your job is not to be clever — it is to be reliable. Master the vocabulary so a senior tech can talk to you in shorthand, and master the keyboard tools (Task Manager, Event Viewer, Services) so you can answer 'is the computer broken?' without rebooting it.

The MSP (Managed Service Provider) world in 60 seconds

  • ▸MSP = Managed Service Provider. One firm runs IT (Information Technology) for many clients under contract.
  • ▸MSA = Master Service Agreement — the legal umbrella.
  • ▸SLA (Service Level Agreement) = Service Level Agreement — response/resolution time you must hit.
  • ▸PSA (Professional Services Automation) = Professional Services Automation — the ticket system (ConnectWise, Autotask, HaloPSA).
  • ▸RMM (Remote Monitoring and Management) = Remote Monitoring & Management — the agent on every endpoint.

Triage formula

Priority = Impact × Urgency. Impact = how many users affected. Urgency = how badly is work blocked. One stuck printer is P3; whole-firm email outage is P1. Always set priority before working — it tells the dispatcher who waits.

The six parts of a PC

  • ▸CPU (Central Processing Unit) — brain. Rarely fails; throttles when hot.
  • ▸RAM (Random Access Memory) — short-term memory. Bad RAM = random BSODs with different codes.
  • ▸Storage (SSD (Solid State Drive)/HDD (Hard Disk Drive)) — long-term memory. SMART errors and slow boots = dying drive.
  • ▸Motherboard — spine connecting everything. Bulging caps = replace.
  • ▸PSU (Power Supply Unit) — power. Won't turn on at all? Suspect PSU first.
  • ▸Peripherals — monitors, keyboards, docks. The first thing to swap, not the last.

Four Windows panes that solve half your tickets

  • ▸Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) — runaway processes, startup load.
  • ▸Event Viewer — Application + System logs around crash time.
  • ▸Services (services.msc) — restart Print Spooler before you reboot the box.
  • ▸User profile C:\Users\<name> — corruption looks like network or permission bugs.

Glossary

Ticket
A logged unit of work. If it isn't in the PSA, it didn't happen.
BSOD
Blue Screen of Death — Windows kernel crash; check error code.
ESD
Electrostatic Discharge — ground yourself before touching components.
Replication steps
The exact sequence to reproduce a bug, written in the ticket.
